The Magnus Outreach Method, or MOM, is how I get local SEO clients. I offer a free SEO report in local Facebook groups, show the business owner their site next to the competitor beating them, and offer to fix the gaps.

My team named it after a webinar where I ran the process live and had two clients reach out before the recording ended.

The six steps

  1. Join local Facebook groups. Community and business groups within 50 to 100 miles of where you live. That's where local business owners hang out, and where you're most believable.
  2. Be a local first, then post the offer. Comment, answer questions, say hi to people you know. Then post a simple offer for a free SEO report on their website.
  3. Audit their site and their top competitor. Run one report on the business that responded, and a second on the competitor sitting above them in the local results.
  4. Share the report. Send it by DM and offer a quick call to walk through it. Lead with value: where they're losing ground and what you'd fix first.
  5. Negotiate. Don't jump straight to a monthly contract. Offer a one time fix for the problems in the report, or trade services if that fits.
  6. Deliver from day one, then go monthly. Fix the on-page issues, optimize the existing pages and add pages for keywords they're missing. Once they see results, a monthly service is an easy conversation.

Why the comparison does the selling

Business owners don't buy SEO jargon. They buy the moment they see their own site next to a competitor they recognize, with a list of every keyword that competitor ranks for and they don't.

"We should probably do something about Google" turns into "I'm losing customers to the business down the road, right now."

What happened when I ran it live

I posted the offer in Beaumont Talks, a community group where I live, during a webinar. Report requests came in while I was still recording, and kept coming for days. Two people offered to trade services within the hour, massage therapy and house cleaning, for fixing their SEO. It turned into one new paying client.

The tools

The method works with any audit tool. I use Xagio, because its Audit runs in about 20 seconds per site and white labels the report, so I can answer ten requests in under ten minutes.

The full walkthrough, including the post I used, is on the Xagio blog: How to get SEO clients using the Magnus Outreach Method.

Where it fits in what I teach

MOM is client acquisition. It works for agency work, and for finding the business owner who will rent a site in the Direct to Buyer path of FBR|R.
